Lorry driver medicals carried out by GMC-registered doctors

HGV drivers naturally spend a lot of time on the road. Therefore, both you and your employer have a responsibility to ensure that you remain fit enough to carry out the job.

To obtain your category C or C+E license, you’ll need to undergo a medical examination. After that, repeat check-ups will be required when you turn 45, and every 5 years thereafter until the age of 65. From 65 onwards, you’ll be required to have your medical conducted annually. Additionally, all existing lorry drivers are required to undergo medical examinations at these specified intervals to ensure their continued fitness for the role.

At Simply Medicals, we provide convenient, competent, and cost-efficient driver medicals. You’ll find our service more affordable than seeing your doctor and optician separately, and we’ll have it all wrapped up for you in no time. Most of our drivers are seen within the week, and we have over 22 locations around the West Midlands and South of England to suit your needs.

Our locations include:

Edgbaston, West Bromwich, Willenhall, Kingswinford, Kidderminster, Droitwich, Telford, Cannock, Brownhills, Tamworth, Garretts Green, Solihull, Redditch, Worcester, Cheltenham, Bristol, Swindon, Newbury , Oxford, Banbury and Warwick.

What does the HGV medical examination involve?

You’ll undergo a comprehensive medical assessment, including a physical examination that covers a range of checks to ensure you meet the medical standards for HGV drivers. This includes a vision assessment, where your eyesight will be tested using a Snellen chart to determine your visual acuity. We’ll also check your blood pressure and discuss your medical history and any medications you may currently be taking, as these may impact your ability to drive safely.

On average a HGV medical takes 10-15 minutes to undertake.

You have your first medical when you apply. Thereafter, it is at the age of 45. Then, every 5 years until the age of 65. After which it is annually.

Any new medical issues are best discussed with your GP first. If they feel it is notifiable then you must notify the DVLA. Do not wait for your next medical to declare conditions.

The doctor will conduct an eye test. Then they will check your weight, height, blood pressure and listen to your heart. They will then take a detailed history of your current and past medical issues. The doctor will inform you if there are any issues.

A HGV medical costs £49.99 if booked online or £55.00 if booked over the phone.

It is possible to fail. Simply Medicals provides a free re-test if there are any issues with your medical. So you can sort them out with your GP and get a re-test and pass. There are some conditions that are barred for HGV driving. The doctor will inform you if this is the case for your medical condition.

This is a mandatory health assessment to check if a driver is fit to drive.
