Student Paramedic | First Steps To Becoming a Student Paramedic

To become a student paramedic, you need to be not only a good clinician but also a good driver. One of the requirements is to have C1 Medical. This allows you to drive ambulances, as they are heavier than normal cars. Here is everything you need to know about Paramedic Medical.

Why Do Student Paramedics Need A Medical?

Student Paramedics need to be able to drive an ambulance. This can sometimes be a requirement for the actual application to become a student paramedic.

Ambulances are in the C1 category for vehicles. This is because they weigh more than 3.5 tonnes. Which is what the normal car licence allows for. You need a medical to be able to drive vehicles heavier than this and need to apply and pass training for the vehicle.

The training is provided by the ambulance service, during your student paramedic training. The requirement is that you have applied for the C1 provisional licence.

How Do I Apply for the C1 Provisional Licence?

Firstly, you need to get a medical done. When you see one of our doctors they will help your through the D2 form and guide you through how to fill it. You then send the D2 and D4 form to the DVLA. When you receive your licence back you have your C1 provisional on it and you can check for this online here.

How Much Does The Student Paramedic Medical Cost?

The medical costs vary. If you go to your own GP it can cost between £90-£240. However, if you come to private supplier e.g. Simply Medicals it will cost between £49.99-£55. Depending on offers at the time.

What Happens At The Medical?

The Student paramedic medical is the same as the lorry driver medical. It involves having an eye test, blood pressure check. Some general questions about your physical health and any medication you take. Lastly, the doctor will listen to your heart for any murmurs and carry out any further physical examination needed for you.

Once you have a C1 provisional or have applied for it you stand a much better chance of getting into a student paramedic course. The medical is simple and not very expensive and it is better to get this step out of the way to start your journey saving lives as a STUDENT PARAMEDIC!

Good luck!
