The HGV Medical can be a daunting part of the HGV training process.
Today we will go through exactly what HGV Medical entails, what it costs and how we can help you.
Who Can Do Your HGV Medical?
Your HGV medical is done by your own GP or a private full GMC registered doctor.
However, it is easier and cheaper to get it done by a private full GMC registered doctor. Simply Medicals provides HGV Medicals across all of West Midlands.
Furthermore, the availability is a lot more. In addition, the price is around half of the cost or maybe less, compared to what your GP charges.

What Happens During your Medical?
The medical has 3 steps:
- Fill out the medical disclaimer form in reception
- Have your Blood pressure, height, weight and eye sight tested
- See the doctor to complete the medical form
What do we test in the HGV Medical
The HGV Medical consists of 2 parts:
- The Eye test
- The Medical part
The Eye test
The eye test is done with an eye chart 3m away from you. If you meet the medical eye sight standard then we will normally sign off the medical form and give it to you.
However, the Eye sight requirement for HGV is slightly higher than for normal car driving. Don’t worry, the doctor will tell you if there are any issues with this.
What If I Wear Contact lenses or glasses?
If you need glasses or contact lenses, please bring them with you for the medical as well as the prescription from the opticians. Don’t worry, if you don’t have the prescription. We have machines to check your prescription in our offices.
The HGV Medical Part
The Medical part involves a few basic checks:
- Blood Pressure
- Heart auscultation (Listening to your heart with a stethoscope)
- Further examinations are needed due to any medical issue you have, e.g. diabetes
Once the basic checks are done, the doctor will take a detailed history of the medication you take. Furthermore, information about medical issues you suffer from.
Lastly, if you are under the care of any specialist doctors, they will need this information.
How Long does the Medical take?
The HGV Medical takes around 10-15 minutes depending on medical complexity.
