At SimplyMedicals, one of our most popular services is the taxi medical (also known as a PCO, Hackney Carriage, or Private Hire medical depending on the council). Many drivers are unsure what to expect, so here are the most common questions we hear — with clear, simple answers.
What Is a Taxi Medical and Who Needs One?
Most councils require taxi and private hire drivers to undergo a medical to ensure they are fit to drive passengers safely. The exact requirements vary between councils, but the medical is usually similar to a DVLA Group 2 standard.
You may need a taxi medical when:
- Applying for your first taxi licence
- Renewing your licence (every 1–3 years depending on the council)
- After certain medical conditions (e.g., major surgery, heart problems)
The purpose is not to catch drivers out — it’s to ensure passenger safety and identify any health issues early.
What Happens During the Medical?
Each council has slightly different paperwork, but most assessments include:
1. Vision Check
We check your eyesight with and without glasses. Some councils require an optician to complete this part, while others allow the examining doctor to do it.
2. Blood Pressure Measurement
High blood pressure is one of the most common reasons drivers need follow-up. Avoid caffeine and smoking before your appointment.
3. Medical History Review
You’ll be asked about:
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Mental health
- Medications
- Sleep apnoea
- Epilepsy
- Substance or alcohol issues
Most conditions do NOT automatically block you from driving — they just need appropriate management.
4. Physical Examination
This usually includes:
- Weight and BMI
- Urine dip test
- Heart and lung check
- General health review
Common Concerns Drivers Have
1. “Will I fail if I’m on medication?”
Not usually. Blood pressure tablets, diabetes medication, and many other drugs are permitted as long as the condition is stable.
2. “What if I have diabetes?”
Diet-controlled and tablet-controlled diabetes rarely causes problems. Insulin users need regular specialist reviews, but many still drive professionally.
3. “Do I need to bring anything?”
Yes — bring:
- Photo ID
- Glasses/contact lenses
- A list of medications
- Any hospital letters
4. “How long does it take?”
Most taxi medicals at SimplyMedicals take 15–20 minutes.
5. “What if my council has special rules?”
We work with multiple councils and are familiar with their specific requirements. Just tell us which council you’re applying to.
Taxi medicals are quick, simple, and designed to keep both drivers and passengers safe. With the right preparation, most drivers pass without any issues.
Ultimately, It all starts with your Taxi Medical.
