Tachograph machines are used to record how long you are working for. The government has strict rules with regards to how long a lorry driver can drive. The rest periods are also set. Furthermore, even what you can do during your rest periods is also governed by the DVLA.
What is a Tachograph
This is the machine built into the lorry which records your driving hours. There are 2 types.
- Analogue
- Digital
Analogue tachograph
These are not used anymore and are basically hand written books which have your hours documented.
Digital Tachograph
All modern lorrys are made with these already built in. Furthermore, you will learn how to use these during your driver CPC course. You need your on digital tachograph which you insert into the machine for it to work.
How to apply for the driver tachograph card
There are 2 ways to apply for the digital tachograph:
- Online
- Post
Online digital tachograph application
Firstly, you can apply for a UK digital tachograph if you are a GB resident and have a GB licence. The cost for the first one is £32. You can apply using the DVLA website here.
Postal digital tachograph application
Furthermore, the postal application can be done using this form. It can be downloaded and sent or you can request an official form from the DVLA / get it from the post office.
Thereafter, you must send this application to:
DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1ST
Please note the postcode is different to the one you send your D4 / D2 form to.
You will need to send payment as a postal order via the post office.
