Motorsport Medical Blood Pressure Requirements Explained

Motorsport involves concentration, quick reactions and physical demands, which is why medical fitness can be an important part of participating safely. Depending on the type of motorsport and the organisation issuing the licence, drivers may need to complete a medical assessment before competing.

One of the routine checks that may be included in a motorsport medical is blood pressure. Understanding what is measured, what the results mean and what happens if your blood pressure is elevated can help make the process straightforward.

Why Is Blood Pressure Checked for Motorsport?

Blood pressure is a measurement of the force of blood against the walls of your arteries. It is recorded using two numbers: systolic blood pressure, which is the pressure when your heart contracts, and diastolic blood pressure, which is the pressure when your heart relaxes between beats.

A blood pressure reading may be taken as part of a motorsport medical to provide an overall assessment of your cardiovascular health. This is particularly relevant because driving competitively can involve physical exertion, adrenaline and stressful situations.

An elevated reading does not necessarily mean that someone is medically unfit to participate. Blood pressure can temporarily increase because of anxiety, caffeine, recent exercise or simply being nervous about the medical examination.

For this reason, healthcare professionals may consider the reading alongside your medical history and other aspects of the examination rather than relying on a single measurement in isolation.

What Happens If Your Blood Pressure Is High?

There is not one universal blood pressure number that automatically determines whether someone can participate in every form of motorsport. Requirements can vary depending on the licence, governing body and type of competition.

If your blood pressure is higher than expected during your medical, the doctor may repeat the measurement after allowing you to sit quietly and relax. This can help determine whether the initial result was affected by temporary factors.

If your blood pressure remains significantly elevated, you may be advised to arrange further assessment with your GP or another healthcare professional. This could involve additional blood pressure measurements, including home or ambulatory monitoring.

It is important not to stop prescribed blood pressure medication before a medical assessment unless specifically advised by your doctor. Similarly, attempting to artificially lower your blood pressure immediately before an examination is not appropriate.

Preparing for Your Motorsport Medical

There are several simple things you can do before your appointment to help ensure your blood pressure reading is representative.

Try to avoid strenuous exercise immediately before the assessment and allow yourself enough time to arrive without rushing. Caffeine, nicotine and stress can also temporarily increase blood pressure, so avoiding these shortly before the examination may be helpful.

Wear clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm, as blood pressure is usually measured using an inflatable cuff around the arm.

You should also bring details of any medication you take and relevant information about your medical history. If you already know that you have high blood pressure, it is worth discussing this with your doctor before your assessment rather than assuming that it will automatically prevent you from obtaining a motorsport licence.
