Diabetes and Motorsport Medicals Explained

Motorsport places significant demands on concentration, reaction times and physical performance. As a result, medical fitness can form an important part of obtaining a competition licence.

If you have diabetes, you may be wondering whether you can still participate in motorsport and whether your condition will affect your medical assessment.

The answer depends on the type of diabetes, how it is managed and, importantly, the type of motorsport licence you are applying for. Motorsport medical requirements are not necessarily the same as the DVLA requirements for ordinary road driving.

Does Diabetes Prevent You from Getting a Motorsport Licence?

Having diabetes does not necessarily prevent you from participating in motorsport. However, Motorsport UK specifically identifies insulin-controlled diabetes as a medical condition that may require additional information as part of a competition licence application. (Motorsport UK)

Motorsport UK requires all competition licence applicants to complete an annual medical self-declaration. Depending on the answers provided and the grade of licence being sought, the applicant may then need a doctor’s medical, ECG and/or vision test. (Motorsport UK)

Diabetes is specifically included in the medical self-declaration process. Applicants are asked whether they have been diagnosed with diabetes or treated with insulin or medicines to lower blood glucose. (Motorsport UK)

This is important because motorsport licensing considers the risks associated with diabetes differently from ordinary driving.

For certain Motorsport UK licences, insulin-treated diabetes has historically been subject to additional restrictions. The current 2026 National Competition Rules state that competitors requiring insulin treatment will not normally be issued licences for certain categories, including Racing, Karting, Rallycross, Stage Rallying and International Rallying. However, the rules also provide for applications by insulin-controlled competitors to be considered in certain circumstances. (Joomag)

What Happens During a Motorsport Medical?

If you require a doctor’s medical, the examination is intended to assess whether you are medically fit for the relevant competition licence.

The doctor may need to understand your diabetes history, treatment and general health. Particular attention may be given to conditions that could cause sudden impairment or affect your ability to compete safely.

Hypoglycaemia is an important consideration for people taking insulin or certain other glucose-lowering medication. A significant fall in blood glucose can cause symptoms such as sweating, shaking, confusion, impaired concentration and, in severe cases, loss of consciousness.

This is particularly relevant to motorsport because competitors need to maintain concentration and control throughout a session or event.

Motorsport UK currently has a dedicated process for competitors with insulin-controlled diabetes and identifies diabetes as one of the conditions for which additional supporting information may be required. Its Medical Expert Group also includes specialist expertise in diabetes. (Motorsport UK)

The exact requirements therefore depend on the competition licence and circumstances of the individual competitor.

Preparing for Your Motorsport Medical

If you have diabetes, preparation can make the medical assessment considerably easier.

Bring accurate details of your diabetes treatment and be prepared to discuss how you monitor your blood glucose. If you use insulin or another medication that can cause hypoglycaemia, you should understand the symptoms of low blood glucose and how you manage them.

You should also declare your diabetes accurately when completing your Motorsport UK medical self-declaration. Motorsport UK states that if a competitor receives a diagnosis, treatment or injury during a year in which they are licensed, they must inform Motorsport UK immediately, and the licence may be suspended until satisfactory information has been provided to its Medical Team. (Motorsport UK)

It is also important to remember that a motorsport medical is not the same thing as an HGV or taxi medical. The relevant standard depends on the licence and competition you are applying for.

If you have diabetes, check the current Motorsport UK requirements for your specific licence before arranging your medical. You may need additional information from your GP, diabetes specialist or another healthcare professional.

At SimplyMedicals, we understand that medical requirements can vary considerably between different types of professional and specialist driving. Preparing the correct information in advance can help make your assessment as straightforward as possible.

Ultimately, it all starts with your motorsport medical requirements.
