Fuel crisis due to the HGV driver shortage - THE ARMY IS BEING DEPLOYED ?!?!?!

If you live in the UK you are not a stranger to the growing queues at all of our fuel stations.

The government has acted on the shortage of HGV driver's and also is trying to tackle the 100,000 person shortage in HGV drivers in this country.

So how exactly does the government plan on sorting it out.

Well... Firstly there are so many people with Class 1 driving abilities and they aren't being used in the industry. So where are all of these drivers?

The army has an abundance of people who can drive these beasts of vehicles.

Therefore, the army will be providing some drivers for this.

This might help now.. But it most definitely does not solve the underlying problem, which is the driver shortage itself.

What caused HGV driver shortage?

The HGV industry has been lagging behind for years. There has always been a HGV driver shortage. So why is it so bad now?

There's a number of reasons. These are the top 3 we thought of that can explain it:

  1. Driver conditions haven't been the best in the recent years. A lot of old school drivers have chosen to stay on, simply because they are unable to retrain and this is all they know.

  2. During the pandemic there were virtually no Lorry driver tests being undertaken. Naturally, this will cause the gap in in drivers and the demand bigger.

  3. A lot of drivers have had to return to their country due to Brexit. Its fair to say there is a lot of bitterness. It is understandable, given the drivers are getting very short visas. Making them not really jumping on the opportunity to help us out.

HGV Driver crisis - What the government plans on doing...

The government plans to increase the number of drivers through a few different ways for instance:

Increasing the number of driver tests by 50,000 a year

  • It plans on doing this by using the ministry of defence examiners

  • The DVSA is recruiting a further 40 examiners also

  • Allow NHS trusts and NHS ambulance services to carry out their own C1 ambulance driving tests.

Recruit HGV drivers who have a licence and are not in the industry

  • 1,000,000 letters have been sent out current HGV licence holders to thank them and offer employment opportunities with flexible hours.

  • This will inevitably bring forward drivers who may not be driving at the moment

  • If their licence has lapsed they will need a HGV medical.

HGV training courses

The department for education is investing £10m to create new HGV training boot camps to train 3,000 more HGV drivers. However, that is a lot of money to train just 3,000 drivers!

As fuel tankers need specialist training they are working on getting courses set up for people who want to be able to drive fuel tankers.

Seasonal worker scheme

5,000 HGV fuel tanker and food lorry drivers will be added to existing visa scheme and will be able to come to the UK for three months in the run-up to Christmas, providing short-term relief for the haulage industry.

When will it all end?

Firstly, only God knows. There is a huge gap to fill in the HGV driver market. These solutions are part of a grand problem which is a lot people just don't want to drive HGVs!

We hope the fuel pumps get back up and running soon. It's good to see that there is a plan from the government.
