Updated: Apr 18

HGV Theory test

The HGV theory test can be very daunting. For many drivers this is the biggest hurdle to getting the HGV licence.

What is the HGV theory test?

The HGV theory test is made up of 2 parts

  1. The Multiple choice questions

  2. Hazard perception

The Multiple Choice questions

By far the most daunting part of the HGV theory test is the multiple choice questions. The best way to pass this is through practicing online questions.

You can find some mock questions on the DVSA website here.

You can buy an app on your phone or the official DVSA Disc which you can find online.

We advise 5-7 days of solid revision for this exam. You can do mock exams on the online Discs which will give you a good indication as to how likely you are to pass the HGV theory test.

Can I pass the HGV theory test if I can't read or write?

The short answer to this is yes you can. The disc has the ability to read out the questions and answers for you.

Although, it may take you longer to do the exam it is possible to do it. My dad was able to do it in the same way. However, you do not get extra time on the day of your exam.

The hazard perception test

The way this works is you have videos of a vehicle driving. A hard will normally come into your vision and cause you to either sway or brake. You need to click when the hazard is there.

Most of the people doing the exam are experienced drivers. You are therefore more likely to spot a hazard before the exam needs you to.

There is no better way to pass this part of the HGV theory test except using the app or the CD. You can practice a few cases and it gives you a window where they expect you to click.

If you notice you are clicking too early, then we advice you click when you normally would. Then, wait about a second and do it again.

However, you must be careful not to click too many times because you will get a zero mark if you do.

Conclusion

In conclusion, The best way to practice for the HGV theory test is using the app or a CD on your computer. You can pass the exam even if you do not know how to read and write. The HGV theory test can be done by it all being spoken out to you.

There is no better way than to practice, practice and more practice.

Ultimately, It all starts with your HGV medical.
