Updated: May 5

Driver's hours

In the UK there are strict regulations when it comes to drivers' hours. Have you ever wondered how many hours a lorry driver can complete? There are numerous different regulations surrounding lorry driving, and one such legal requirement is in relation to drivers' hours.

With this in mind, today, we’re looking at some of the key things you should know about the regulations for drivers’ hours – and what this might mean for your job or business.

The Regulations Regarding Drivers’ Hours in the UK

Unlike many other professions, lorry drivers are strictly controlled in the number of hours they can work. There are three requirements that a lorry driver must adhere to in terms of working hours:

  • Maximum of nine hours driving per day (or ten hours, twice a week)

  • Maximum of fifty-six hours in a single working week

  • Maximum of ninety hours across two consecutive working weeks

Why Time Limits are Important

For many lorry drivers, the temptation to take on overtime above the maximum 90-hour limit in two weeks can be tempting. If they have been trying to save up for a new house deposit or purchase. However, this is illegal, and these working limits are in place to protect both the driver and other road users around them.

Indeed, fatigue is one of the leading causes of road crashes, and Brake.org even considers it as serious as drink-driving. As such, the 90-hour limit is in place for lorry drivers to protect them from getting overtired. Therefore, reducing the risks of accidents. After all – a lorry is a very large and heavy piece of equipment! This is further compounded if you also drive while suffering from sleep disorders such as sleep apnea.

Final Thoughts

Due to the high-risk level of driving a lorry, maximum attention is critical to keep both the lorry driver and other road users safe. With this in mind, there are numerous regulations in place regarding drivers’ hours in the UK. It is critical that both lorry drivers and their employers adhere to these regulations to keep everyone safe.
